The Slovenian Tourist Organization, as the bearer of the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism, awards the Slovenia Green Destination label in platinum, gold, silver and bronze.

The Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism is a certification scheme that, under the Slovenia Green brand, brings together efforts for sustainable tourism development in Slovenia. It provides destinations and providers with practical tools for evaluating and improving sustainable practices, while also promoting.
Tourist destinations that are participating are evaluated on a scale from 1 to 10 in six categories: destination management, nature and landscape, environment and climate, culture and tradition, social climate and the business operations and communication of tourism companies.

Izola achieved an average score of 8.3, earning the gold label.

In the addition of the Municipality of Izola and other participants, our Center for Culture, Sports and Events also contributed to earning the label. By introducing new, more sustainable practices at events, we provided both visitors and providers with alternative, eco-friendly solutions. At the events, bins for separate waste collection are always available, food is served in biodegradable or paper packaging and free drinkable water is available at three water fountains of Rižanski vodovod Koper. This encourages visitors to use reusable water bottles. At the events such as The Festival of Olives, Wine and Fish or St. Martin’s Day, visitors can also purchase glassware.

Sustainability isn’t just a practice we follow at events but also in our offices. In 2024, we joined GREEN OFFICE project, focusing on five areas: waste, energy, water, transportation and health.

Not only us but also cultural and sports associations in Izola often adopt ecological and sustainable practices.

»At JK Olimpic, we combine a love for sailing and the sea with the care for environment. We teach the children about the importance of water, recycling and using sailboats as eco-friendly transportation. Our goal is to make ecology a part of their daily life. From the first day we teach children how to properly handle waste. Water bottles and other waste are never thrown into the sea or along the coast, but separated and thrown into the appropriate containers. One of the main tasks of the club is this direction is the purchase of supports for waste separation, which will be placed in the club spaces and available to all members.
Conversations with children often bring fresh ideas for a sustainable future. The sea along the Slovenian coast is still clean and full of life and we work towards to keep it that way for future generations.«
