The Ljubljana Jazz Octet is made up of musicians who are actively involved in the Ljubljana jazz scene. The group was formed in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, when academic pianist Marko Petrušič began composing pieces and arranging music for a five-piece brass and wind section. The compositions reflect events from this challenging period. The arrangements employ classical techniques such as four-way close harmony with the baritone saxophone playing an octave below, spreads, linear arranging, and some parts performed in unison. Sonically, the octet draws inspiration from swing and bebop styles.
Their most significant performance was part of the Jazz Tuesdays series at the Cankarjev Dom Club, though they most frequently perform on the streets of Ljubljana — hence the name of the group. To date, the Ljubljana Jazz Octet has released two albums: Rainy Day Blues and Walk Through the Neighbourhood. This fall, they plan to record and release their third studio album.
