“If there is such a thing as a perfect film, then Taxi Driver is certainly one of them. This cult classic from 1976, nearly 50 years after its premiere, still remains one of the most well-structured and finest cinematic masterpieces we have witnessed.” (source: Žiga Špile, Filmologija)

Taxi Driver is a 1976 American neo-noir psychological thriller directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Paul Schrader.
Set in a decaying and morally depleted New York in the aftermath of the Vietnam War, it follows the story of a lonely taxi driver who descends into madness as he plots to assassinate a presidential candidate (Harris), for whom works the woman he is infatuated with (Shepherd), and a pimp (Keitel) exploiting an underage prostitute (Foster), with whom he forms a bond.
The film premiered on 8 February 1976 and was both a financial success and critically acclaimed. At the 49th Academy Awards, it received five nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Robert De Niro) and Best Supporting Actress (Jodie Foster). At the Cannes Film Festival, it won the Palme d’Or for Best Film, along with three BAFTA Awards.
At the same time, it sparked public controversy due to its depiction of violence and the casting of the then 12-year-old Jodie Foster as an underage prostitute.
